About Theresa Evans
How did I, a girl who never had much success in organized sports in high school and hated to sweat become so interested in fitness? One word-RESULTS!
In high school I ran track and enjoyed the competitive nature, but when an ankle injury left me with the option of surgery or quitting, I must say I chose to quit. Then, as so many of us do, I became wrapped up in everyday life and did not take time to take care of my body or my health. I was diagnosed with genetic high cholesterol at the age of 20, and I did nothing about it. Even with high LDL and a total number of over 200, I was more interested in eating what I liked and being sedintary than taking control.
Combine this with a love of cooking (my dream to go to culinary school) and the years go by. Weight creeps up, doesn't happen overnight. Then it FEELS like overnight when the pants dont button or fit right, the shirts are tighter around the arms, and the scale reads numbers 15-20 lbs higher than high school. I wasn't terribly overweight, just out of shape and lacking any muscle tone. Two pregnancies later, the time had come to take control of my body and my health.
I started off at home, running on the treadmill and doing push-ups along with sit-ups. I watched what I ate, PAID ATTENTION to the labels on the food for the first time in my life. Was it a miracle when the weight came off? No. There is no magic here. The results came from getting active and eating foods which promoted weight loss and improved my overall health. Nutrition is the cornerstone of any weight loss or exercise program. Please see my Nutrition page for information on the foods I eat and recommend.
I joke that I am a person who got in shape in order to join a gym. I did it at home first. When I felt I had done all I could at home, I joined a local gym here in Bethel, Sportsplex. I was introduced to Personal Trainer Sean O'Malley for "Introductory Training Sessions". I knew that if I would spend the money for a gym membership for the first time in my life at 33 years old, I would learn how to use the equipment properly and with the guidance of a professional. Sean assessed my condition and gave me the tools to really transform my diet and understand the fundamentals of strength training. I researched non-stop, questioned him on everything and we came up with my program together. I did not quit. My commitment was 5-6 days per week and I fit it into my life. My kids got involved and found the "Kid's Club" at the gym a new treat of toys and friends. I was in the best shape of my life and I was the one in control.
